Poor ad on a news story

A huge problem with internet news websites is that they often have ads that accompany them. For instance, if there's a story about eating right, you would see clickable ads for things like diet pills on the side of the webpage. The ads are on the website based on the content in the story. HOWEVER, sometimes just because the content is related, there are times where it doesn't quite "agree" with what's in the story.

The clickable ad above from WTOL channel 11's website above is for a nursing home. Now read the story below.

STARK COUNTY (WTOL) - An Ohio pastor is accused of sexually assaulting a retirement home resident. Fifty-nine-year-old Eugene Dietz works at the New Life Christian Church in Stark County. Cops say he attacked an 87-year-old woman who was bedridden and couldn't defend herself. He's charged with gross sexual imposition. Dietz has confessed to the crime. He's being held on a $25,000 bond.

Oh dear. That's an unfortunate placement of the ad, indeed! I have noticed these content related type ads on the internet too. Sometimes they are accurate, sometimes they are related but from a very wrong angle as you talk about here, and sometimes they are related but in a funny way. I guess that's what happens when it is a machine that is just matching up the key words.

Yup. That's badly done (and darkly, darkly amusing). I use gmail and am amused by the ads that wind up on the margin of my email. Keywords are objective little critters. It's a great lesson on determining meaning from context.
