Choice of words

Here are two headlines from recent news articles:

Obama raps McCain for ignorance of his own houses (AP)

Obama campaign raps Bush on endangered-species plan (Arizona Daily Star)

When did "raps" become a word used to meaning "to criticize" or attack? Also, looking at the racial aspect of it...when will we see a headline that says "McCain raps Obama campaign?"

"Raps" just seems like a very peculiar word choice.

"Raps"? That doesn't make much sense to me. I'm sure many people are questioning that choice of terminology as well. I mean, that term conjures up many other things in my mind!

I need to get with the times.

Bella...I don't know the last time (if ever) I saw "raps" used to attack or criticize something. To me, the DOMINANT, generally accepted meaning of raps is basically performing poetry with rhythm.

To me, it's a bad choice of a word.

It seems like slang to me, and it would be easily misinterpreted. In a news story, I would think a better word definitely should have been used to make things more clear.
