Around this time of year, I am usually preparing for a new school year. This time, it's different because I'll be at the University of Toledo. However, I still turn to the same sources for motivation. There have been many movies done that have focused on schools or education. Few have the motivational impact of the ones I am about to mention.
The first is Stand and Deliver. Here's the movie promo.
The second clip or sample of clips is from The Emperor's Club, starring Kevin Kline. In this movie, Mr. Hundert tries to reach a rebellious kid named Sedgewick Bell.
If you have seen either of these movies, please leave a comment or two with your thoughts.

I really liked "Stand and Deliver". It gave me feelings of HOPE like anyone has the ability to accomplish just about anything as long as they set their mind to it and work really hard.
Kinda reminds me of the movie, "Rudy". It's one of my favorites.
Bella...I'm a big fan of "Stand and Deliver" as well. Edward James Olmos does a great job playing Jaime Escalante. I really liked how he stood up to the tough students and didn't bend. He set the tone for his class that he wanted them to better themselves.
I haven't seen either one of these movies but they look very interesting. I guess I always think of the old classic, To Sir With Love, when I think of motivational movies dealing with education.
What will you be teaching, Struke?
Best of luck to you with the new year and with motivating your students. My husband is a school psychologist so he is familiar with the educational system. Unfortunately, he mostly works with troubled students and those with problems. Many of them aren't very motivated.
I'm adding your blog to my blog list. Hope that is Ok with you. :)
Daisy...I've heard of "To Sir With Love" but haven't seen it. Same with the classic "Blackboard Jungle."
I'll be teaching Mass Communication and Society, Radio Production and Programming, Radio/TV Newswriting, and Senior Portfolio.
Best of luck with your husband and the upcoming schoolyear. He has a thankless job. Teachers and all staff have to realize the impact we have on kids. We're not here to just "move them on." It's a tremendous feeling to know that you have made a difference in someone's life. I got the sweetest e-mail from one of my former students who is going to be a senior this year.
What I said above is the theme of the two movies I have clips from. I highly recommend watching "The Emperor's Club." Kevin Kline is outstanding. You really respect what he tries to do and how badly he wants to make a difference.
Another movie I forgot to mention is called "Teachers." It stars Nick Nolte. "Teachers" is about a school district that is being sued by a graduate who cannot read. The lawsuit ends up uncovering a lot of other things wrong with the educational system.
Yes, Daisy, most definitely, you may add my blog to your list. I'll do a blog list someday, when I have time to figure it out and play with it.
